Mark Shields has been married for over seventeen years and is the proud father of five daughters. He is a native of Phoenix and has deep Arizona roots, going back four generations. He is also a third-generation Arizona lawyer. Mark graduated from Washington High School in Phoenix and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1993 with a degree in sociology. Before earning his bachelor’s degree, Mark also spent two years in Portugal as a missionary for his church and working with people of varied backgrounds, ethnicities, and cultures. After working for a year or two while his wife finished up her degree, Mark entered the J. Reuben Clark Law School, where he graduated in 1997. Mark’s law school class was ranked seventh in the nation for average GPA and LSAT scores, so he was immediately initiated into a highly competitive environment.. Mark began with Gillespie, Shields & Durrant back when it was Gillespie & Associates in 1996, prior to his last year of law school. Since that time, Mark has practiced heavily in the area of family law and has also had extensive experience in civil litigation, employment law, juvenile law, and insurance disputes.. Mark is happy to report that his approach to practicing law has changed remarkably little during this recession because he has always sought to deliver true value to his clients. Whether the case involves millions of dollars or no dollars, Mark has consistently sought to provide his clients the best service for the most accessible price.. I am passionate about helping people formulate plans to reach their goals.  Since 1999, I have been involved in that process with hundreds of clients as a professional in the financial services industry.  In 2011, I enrolled at Arizona Summit Law School. It wasn’t always easy balancing family and school while maintaining a growing financial services company.  But with the help of my wife and others, along with some divine intervention, I graduated with honors (summa cum laude) in 2014.  The rest is history.  Now I spend my time helping individuals and families create and maintain solid estate plans – truly an important work!. On a more personal note:. Before becoming an attorney, I grew up in Scottsdale, went to Horizon High School, and then joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves.  Following my active duty training, I went on a 2 year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and later graduated from Arizona State University – go Sun Devils!  Along the way I moved to Mesa where I met my sweetheart – Jennifer.  We were married in 1999 and have since been blessed with 6 children (4 boys & 2 girls)!  So when I’m not at work, I’m usually playing with my family, fixing up the house, or playing basketball.

In order to attend law school everybody has to take a test referred to as the LSAT.  Mark scored in the top 3% in the country on LSAT.  After doing well in undergrad and scoring so extremely high on the LSAT, Mark  had his pick of law schools to attend.  Mark was offered academic scholarships from several prestigious law schools.  But Mark put his family first, as his wife had just started her career as an teacher, so he entered law school at the Sandra day O’Conner College of Law at Arizona State.  Mark graduated from law school and immediately started defending people from the persecution of the government.. After being admitted to practice law, Mark worked for a local criminal defense attorney by the name of David B. Smith.  In his first few year of practicing criminal defense, Mark got unbelievable experience.  Mark was lead counsel on at least one felony trial per month during his first two years.  Additionally, within two years Mark was lead counsel for several homicide cases.  During Mark’s first three years Mark won over 20 felony trials and got many more felonies dismissed.  A sample of the cases Mark won during his first three years is: MURDER; AGGRAVATED ASSAULT (Knife); CHILD ABUSE; AGGRAVATED ASSAULT (Baseball bat); RESISTING ARREST; AGGRAVATED ASSAULT (on Police officer); BURGLARY; AGGRAVATED ASSAULT (serious physical injury); AGGRAVATED ASSAULT (stabbing); AGGRAVATED ASSAULT (knife slashing); THEFT OF MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION; GRAND THEFT AUTO; AGGRAVATED ASSAULT (gun).  The list goes on and on..
