Location: Peoria, Illinois, USA My girlfriend's house has some problems that are deteriorating due to moisture damage in the bathroom wall and, separately, presumable moisture damage underneath damaged siding. The bathroom wall is literally crumbling and we have sheeting up with damp rid behind it to try to keep the damage spreading to the bedroom drywall behind the hole in the shower wall. We were anxious to get a contractor to start renovations before things got worse. Two contractors had red flags when we met with them, and the third seemed decent enough. The planned work was quite extensive - several things in the house were poorly done as homemade jobs or else old enough not to be up to modern code. The full plan included replacing the tub and rerouting plumbing to avoid running up the exterior wall, replacing lead pipes in basement, etc. Etc. The contractor procided a list of work of what they intended to do as a justification for their estimate. They said they needed a 50% deposit in order to get us on the schedule, and at the time the schedule was full for the next 3 weeks. We talked it over and paid the deposit. What we didn't do is get a start date before we signed... and now it's been months and my girlfriend is still chasing them to try to set up a phone call to get a start date. We want to ask for our money back, but what we agreed…
